The Unconventional Success Story of Iconic Designer Helmut Lang

Helmut Lang's journey to becoming an icon in the fashion industry is a story of authenticity and rejection of conventional norms. From his early beginnings as Paul Scepka, self-taught and minimalist in a time of opulence, to changing his name and presenting his first runway show in Paris, Lang's approach to fashion was a stark contrast to the popular trends of the time. With the success of his Vienna exhibition at Centre Pompidou in 1986, Lang's name became synonymous with avant-garde and minimalist fashion. He went on to teach fashion classes at University of Applied Arts in Vienna, work closely with Juergen Teller, and eventually move to New York. In April 2000, Lang made history as the first non-American designer to be awarded by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
