Happy Friday Everyone! It is time for another Sit In On Friday Session. After our latest session with Rayne, we are happy to now consider Cian Ducrot as part of our series as well.
Raised in Cork (Ireland), based in London, but often to be found recording in LA, Cian Ducrot takes a nomadic approach to pop music. Home for this 23-year-old singer, songwriter, producer and classically-trained multi-instrumentalist is wherever he happens to find his laptop and guitar.
His troubled upbringing made him seek an escape. Therefore it is no surprise that he focused on music in school and joined any drama or music club possible. However, Cian’s talent didn’t go unnoticed . He won a full scholarship to study classical flute at the Royal Academy of Music – one of the most prestigious performing arts schools in the world. Around the same time, Cian knew that to create original music he would have to teach himself how to produce. And so he did.
TITLE: Cian, can you shortly introduce yourself and tell us what you’re currently working on?
Cian: Hey My name is Cian Ducrot, I’m an Irish/French Singer-songwriter-producer and I’m currently working on my first EP.
TITLE: You’ve recently released two singles, “Not Usually Like This” and “Crocodiles”. How does making and releasing music feel like during these turbulent times?
Cian: Fantastic and strange… I love releasing music. It’s like Christmas, but there’s also the difficulty that all anyone is looking at right now is numbers etc, which I dont think is ever positive when it comes to music or art.
TITLE: What is your first memory of close contact with music? How did you start getting into making music yourself?
Cian: My mother is a professional classical Pianist and Flautist so I was born into it. In fact both my parents were professional classical musicians as well as my brother. I will always remember sitting under my mom’s piano as a kid while she would play Chopin and I would lie there crying to the music!
TITLE: You are classically trained – how does that influence your style?
Cian: Almost everything I know about music comes from my classical training to be honest so probably everything I do is heavily classically influenced whether it be mood and rhythm or the structure of phrases and the way I produce and arrange my music.
TITLE: Would you say your music impacted your life OR that your life had the bigger impact on your music?
Cian: I think right now it’s probably about 50/50 for me
TITLE: At Title, we emphasize the importance of staying true to yourself, your art, and your identity. Have you found your True Identity yet? How would you describe it?
Cian: I think I’ve been pretty unique to myself since I was a kid and I’ve always tried to keep that same energy about myself since then. I think a lot comes down to not caring what others think of you all the time and just allowing yourself to be authentic and emotional and honest with yourself and the world we live in.
TITLE: Your latest single “Crocodile” deals with the difficulties that can come with friendship. What in your opinion makes a good friendship?
Cian: Someone who would do for you what you would do for them without it having to be said or ever even done. Just knowing they’d be there for you just like you’d be there for them.
TITLE: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Still making music and living in London, moving to LA, or back to Cork?
Cian: In LA finishing up my second album and preparing for my sold out stadium world tour!
TITLE: What advice would you give young artists struggling with motivation and staying creative?
Cian: Go out and live a little, watch some movies, listen to some great music or some podcasts of other creatives or writers or musicians. Don’t put pressure on yourself to create something good! Just create!
