Digital Designer Nina Doll On Sustainability In The Art Industry

Nina Doll is a digital Fashion designer and CGI artist based in Berlin, Germany. The main focus of her work is exploring how to combine fashion craftsmanship with the new possibilities digital fashion is offering and experimenting with garments & techniques that would not be possible in real life. She also loves creating with organic and abstract shapes to either turn them into artwork themselves or to use them as elements within fashion pieces. We talked with her about the fashion industry, design, and how digital alternatives could change both in the near future.

How important is sustainability to you?

I think making an effort to be as sustainable as possible should be part of everyday life and should be in everyone’s responsibility. It is not About being perfect and not making mistakes or never using the plane and so on, it is rather About making conscious decisions within your daily Routine.

Especially working in the fashion industry (which is a main part of the Problem), sustainability is super important.

What changes do you wish to see in the fashion industry in regard to sustainability?

I Would love to see more Brands rethinking the way they produce their Collections, this is not only about where and under which conditions they produce but also about: what are we doing with old Collections/fabrics, do we need to produce samples & prototypes for every Little adjustment, in What way are we designing the garment, do we really need to fly the whole Team around the globe for a Shooting or can we solve this in a different way?

Do you believe the future of sustainable fashion lies within digital design and virtual realities?

In my opinion digital design, art  & Fashion offer an amazing opportunity to restructure the way of production. That does not mean that there should only be digital clothes from now on, but it is a great tool to design and experiment without trying every single change or every cut on a real-life prototype. It can be an Option to cut down sampling + fitting rounds. Also in the last steps of a Collection, virtual reality can help to be way more sustainable for example by creating the environment you want to shoot it digitally instead of flying to the place.

Furthermore if What you are creating is more About expressing yourself and your creativity, then virtual realities are a perfect opportunity to do so without producing any textile in real life.

In your opinion, what are three everyday environmentally conscious things that people could do to decrease their carbon footprint?

Try to skip meat or dairy as often as you can. There are so many good alternatives 🙂

Plan in some more time and walk there. It’s also a nice way to get to know your neighborhood/Kiez more and spot cute places!

And bring your own Cup if you want to take a coffee on your walk or try to find a cafe that has reusable ones (sometimes also gives you a reduced price on your coffee 😉 )
