Special-K: A Journey of Honest Vulnerability and Avant-Garde Sounds

Special-K, whose real name is Katrín Helga Andrésdóttir, is one of TITLE’s favorites. The Icelander convinces in her music with honest vulnerability, dreamy avant-garde sounds and a visual aesthetic that follows a clear thread. In addition to her solo project, the artist is also part of the band Ultraflex, whose sexy post-Soviet aerobic hits can currently be heard everywhere. All the nicer that we can have her on board again for SIT IN ON FRIDAY. She performed a remix version of her song “Dinner for 1”, for which the corresponding music video was recently released.

First of all, of course, we want to know from you what True Identity means to you ?

“True Identity” sounds to me like a phrase for commercials. True Identity = Staged identity. Something used in order to sell me something or convince me of something. Like the opposite of what it’s trying to mean.

What is your first memory or experience of music ?

My mum singing me to sleep.

Why did you start making music ?

To pass the time I guess. “easier than just waitin’ around to die” as Van Zandt put it. And to make boys fall in love with me. It super works.

What inspires you most about the city you live in ? And what did the city add to

your individual sound ?

It’s a cliché but here in Reykjavík it is nature that impacts me most directly. The crispness and colourfulness of the ice-cold sky, the mountains that put on different snow costumes every day etc etc. Also my awesome friends, brilliant talented crazy minds – a bottomless well of inspiration.

When do you feel most creative and most inspired to make music ?

When I have the right amount of time on my hands. Not too little and not too much.

We have all been isolated since the middle of March 2020. How has the quarantine

treated you ?

I know it’s been a really tough year for everyone, but considering the circumstances, I’ve been totally spoiled. Had a lot of adventures with my band Ultraflex, romantic success, actually made money and honestly really needed a break from touring. Still cannot wait for this all to be over, give me all the vaccinations please!

And how does the current situation in the world influence your creative process? What are your musical or creative goals for the next few years ?

Fewer concerts and more focus on visual material, e.g. for the internet. Ultraflex is a priority right now, next year will be largely dedicated to that project, making and releasing our second album. Along with that I’m working on some exciting film stuff.

Was there a musical experience, a concert or a performance that touched your soul?

Yes, thousands. I uglycried alone at a Sigur Rós concert once, that’s the first one that comes to mind.

If you could speak to yourself in the past, what would you say to you?

You’re doing it right.

THANK YOU KATRÍN !
