Maryam Keyhani’s Hats Are the Haven of Fantasy

This interview was featured in our most recent issue, TITLE(D) #6: The Global Passport.

Maryam Keyhani grew up in Tehran and Toronto, and is now based in Berlin, where, together with her husband and children, crafts the most ravishing headpieces. Playing with forms and volumes, her work is eccentric, sculptural, and elegant.

Besides her unique hats, Maryam paints and creates accessories and clothes—all crafted with her hands. To visit Maryam’s shop is to enter a dream-like world: colours, shapes, and playfulness come afloat.

Personal Information

If you could rename yourself, what would it be?

I have the most common, basic, Iranian name and I sort of got used to that. So, if I had to change my name, I would change it to something very peculiar and special.

What would your avatar look like?

My brain doesn’t function that much towards the future but I imagine she would have a hat that could love and do stuff on demand.

What’s your emotional age?

60-70 years old.

What’s your spirit animal?

I’d like to say swan, but more like a wild goose.

Where is home?

Berlin.

Travel Information

What’s the place where you feel like you can be you?

I can be me anywhere, but Berlin is a good place to be yourself.

What has informed the direction of your path?

Play to survive.

What was the last border you crossed?

Berlin to Rome.

How and where have you been stamped?

Like, all the places I’ve been.

Personal Journey Information

How and where does your privilege manifest?

To be able to carry on playing.

How do you connect?

Through making things.

What food warms your soul, or reminds you of home?

Tahchin, tahdig, or any Iranian rice dish really.

Can you name a happy accident you’ve had?

Going to art school.
