Maestro meets Maestro: the french filmmaker and living legend Jean-Luc Godard is the latest subject of Hedi Slimane’s ongoing portraits of artists.
Slimane’s black and white imagery captures the 89 years young godfather of the French New Wave by what he’s doing best besides making movies: smoking and reading – and wearing a fedora.
Slimane is an avid admirer of Godard’s movies as his curated film list for the arthouse streaming service MUBI clearly shows where he selected “Pierrot Le Fou”, one of Godard’s most groundbreaking works. With his unique ability to capture the zeitgeist of youth it seems like a natural fit that Slimane has been inspired by Godard whenever he’s designing a new style for the Parisian youth of today, combined with his sense for timeless looks:
“Godard is someone I have greatly admired since my teenage years, when I was a film buff growing up in Paris.”
Slimane and Godard are both regarded as auteurs with a clear vision and distinctive looks, but at the same time booth are as well image-makers who are often associates with muses, especially Godard: his work with actresses like Jean Seberg shaped the fashion industry for decades after she hit the French cinemas in 1960 with “Breathless” like a meteorite shower.
You wonder what other movies Slimane considers as the best moving images ever existed? We got you covered:
